BURIUS

The working side of the house

What stays out of the BURIUS catalog

The things we turn down, and why a short catalog is the point.

Anything that loses to the drawer

The first question about a new tool is whether it beats what is already in the kitchen drawer. A gadget that does one job more slowly than a knife is a gadget that gets used twice.

We have killed more fruit tools on this test than on any other. A slicer has to be quicker or cleaner than the obvious alternative, or it does not exist.

Anything we cannot specify honestly

If we cannot state a capacity, a load rating or a material without hedging, the product does not get listed. Vague specifications are how a catalog fills up with things nobody can choose between.

That has cost us a few obvious sellers. A cheaper board we were offered could not be given a load figure we trusted, so it never appeared.

Anything that only works once

Printed plastic bunting, foam that compresses flat in a season, a clip that goes brittle in a year. Single-season products are easy to sell and they are how a brand name becomes worthless.

The test is whether it is still working the following year. Everything on this site has passed it on a bench, which is not the same as passing it in your house — and that is what the desk is for.

Other people's brands

We only publish BURIUS products. A handful of listings exist under older marques from the same workshop; those are not on this site, because a page headed with our name should only hold our work.

If you find something sold as ours that is not in this catalog, write to us. We would like to know about it.
