Wide doorways: how we build this site to be usable

What we have done for keyboards, screen readers and small screens, and what we still owe.

What we have done

Every page is built from ordinary headings, lists and links, in the order they are read. Navigation works from the keyboard alone, the focus outline is left visible, and nothing on the site traps focus or opens on hover.

Text sits at a contrast ratio above the AA threshold against its background, body text starts at 17 pixels and the layout reflows to a single column without a horizontal scrollbar at any width we can test.

Images and photographs

Product photographs carry a description of what they show rather than a filename. Decorative images are marked as decorative so a screen reader skips them instead of reading a string of words that mean nothing out loud.

The buy control on each page is an image with a text alternative that says what it does. If images are off or fail to load, the control still reads and still works.

Where we are honest about gaps

The product gallery on a model page uses buttons to swap the main photograph. It is operable from the keyboard, but it does not yet announce the change the way it should, and we know that.

We have tested with a screen reader on desktop and with browser zoom to 200 percent. We have not yet tested properly on every mobile screen reader, so if yours behaves badly we would genuinely like the report.

Tell us

A sentence is enough: the page, the device and what happened. Those messages get priority at the desk, because a page nobody can read is worse than a page that is missing.

Everything we fix from one of those reports gets fixed across the whole site, not just on the page you found.
