Why we make it this way

Fourteen inches is the base drum. It takes a 12 inch cake with the usual margin, and in a tiered build it is the round that carries everything above it while each upper tier sits on a board cut to its own diameter. That is the whole system, and it is why the base has to be a drum rather than a board.
